LATi Bar 6th February 2020 – Plastics Recycling
February 6 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join us for the first LATi Bar of 2020:
On Thursday February 6th from 5.30pm at the Organ Grinder in the heart of Loughborough.
What the evening will be about:
Join us for the first LATi Bar event of 2020, at which Dr John Duncan will take us through the hot topic of plastics recycling. John will explain what plastics are, how and where they are used and how they can be tested. Generally the composition of plastics is difficult to determine and many consumer products contain intimately mixed plastics. This complicates the task of any recycler. Therefore plastics are frequently sorted by shape, e.g. milk & pop bottles as they are each made from one type of plastic. This is a much simpler process than trying to obtain an accurate analysis of an unknown item.
Future strategies on plastics use and recycling will be introduced, including the circular economy – a big development in the plastics industry. Alternatives to normal recycling will also be discussed.
As always, there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and to participate in the discussion.
Well-known to LATi members as a result of his tenure as Chairman of LATi from 2013 to 2019, John Duncan has over 30 years’ experience of the plastics field. After obtaining a PhD in Polymer Physics from Brunel University, John worked in various industrial roles, and for the past 20 years has been Managing Director of Lacerta Technology Ltd, an independent scientific instrument designer and manufacturer with significant development capability and mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and chemometrics skills.
